Let's be honest about what this day trip involves: a 06:00 wake-up, a 2-hour ferry each way, and a fixed amount of time on an island that deserves at least two days. You'll spend roughly 4 hours on ferries and have 5-7 hours on the ground. That's enough for the highlights -- but only the highlights.

Plan your crossing -- check times and book at Ferryscanner.

Key planning points:

  • Take the earliest fast ferry. A 07:00 departure gets you to Santorini by 09:00-09:30, maximising your time on the island.
  • Book the return before you go. The last direct ferry back to Mykonos is typically around 18:30-19:30 depending on the season. Miss it and you're staying overnight.
  • SeaJets and Golden Star are the fastest operators. Book in advance -- popular times sell out in summer.
  • Athinios port is not in Fira. The ferry docks at Santorini's port, which is 25 minutes from Fira by bus. Factor this transfer time into your plans.

What Can You Do in 5-7 Hours?

A picturesque street in Mykonos, Greece, lined with whitewashed buildings and vibrant bougainvillea.

Option 1: Fira and Oia (Self-Guided)

The classic Santorini highlights. From Athinios port, take the bus to Fira (25 minutes). Explore Fira's caldera-edge walkway, then either bus or walk to Oia (the full walk is 10 km and takes 3-5 hours -- too long for a day trip, but you can walk the Fira-to-Firostefani stretch in 15 minutes for the best views and then bus the rest).

Fira: The capital. Walk the caldera edge for the famous views down to the sea. Visit the Megaro Gyzi Museum or the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral. Browse the shops on the main street. Have lunch at a caldera-view restaurant.

Oia: The sunset village. White-washed buildings, blue domes, narrow lanes, and the most photographed views in Greece. The bus from Fira takes 25 minutes.

Option 2: Fira + One Activity

Instead of trying to see both Fira and Oia, spend your time in Fira and add one focused activity:

  • Caldera boat tour (2-3 hours) -- Sail around the volcanic islands in the caldera. Some tours include swimming at hot springs.
  • Wine tasting (1-2 hours) -- Santorini's volcanic soil produces distinctive Assyrtiko wine. Santo Wines and several other wineries offer tastings with caldera views.
  • Akrotiri (1-2 hours) -- The Bronze Age Minoan city buried by the volcanic eruption. Like a Greek Pompeii. Bus from Fira takes 30 minutes.
  • Beach time -- Perissa or Kamari (black volcanic sand) are accessible by bus from Fira in 20-30 minutes.

Option 3: Organised Tour

Several operators run day trips from Mykonos to Santorini that include ferry transfers, guided tours, and sometimes wine tasting or a boat tour. These cost more (150-250+ EUR) but handle all the logistics. Available through Viator and GetYourGuide.

  • 07:00 -- Fast ferry from Mykonos (Tourlos)
  • 09:00 -- Arrive Santorini (Athinios). Bus to Fira (25 min)
  • 09:30 -- Walk the Fira caldera edge. Coffee with a view.
  • 10:30 -- Browse Fira's shops and streets
  • 11:30 -- Bus to Oia (25 min)
  • 12:00 -- Explore Oia. Lunch at a taverna.
  • 14:00 -- Walk the Oia castle area, blue dome photos
  • 15:00 -- Bus back to Fira
  • 15:30 -- Wine tasting or final caldera walk
  • 17:00 -- Bus to Athinios port
  • 18:30 -- Ferry back to Mykonos
  • 20:30 -- Arrive Mykonos

This gives you about 8 hours door-to-door on Santorini. Busy, but workable.

What Should You Know Before Going?

  • Book both ferry tickets in advance. The fast ferries sell out in summer, especially the early morning and late evening crossings. Don't gamble on buying at the port.
  • The Meltemi wind can cancel ferries. In July-August, check the ferry status before heading to the port. If your outbound ferry runs but the return is cancelled, you're stranded.
  • Athinios port is chaotic. The bus from the port to Fira is crowded, the taxi queue is long, and the road is steep. Be patient and allow extra time.
  • Santorini is not cheap. A caldera-view lunch in Oia can easily cost 30-50 EUR per person. Budget tavernas exist but aren't in the prime view spots.
  • An overnight stay is genuinely better. The Oia sunset, evening in Fira, and a second day to explore Akrotiri or the beaches -- you miss all of this on a day trip. If your Mykonos schedule allows it, spend one night on Santorini instead.
  • Don't try to do everything. Pick Fira + Oia, or Fira + one activity. Trying to fit in a volcano boat tour AND Oia AND a winery AND a beach will leave you exhausted and late for the ferry.
  • The Fira-to-Oia hike is not a day-trip activity. The 10 km caldera walk takes 3-5 hours and would consume your entire time on the island.

When Is the Best Time to Go?

June and September -- Good ferry schedules, warm weather, fewer crowds. The best balance of access and comfort.

July-August -- Most frequent ferries but everything on Santorini is at peak capacity and price. Oia in August is shoulder-to-shoulder.

May and October -- Fewer ferry options. Some tourist services on Santorini may have limited hours. But the crowds are thin and the weather is pleasant.

Santorini is about 110 km from Mykonos. Fast ferry takes 2 hours. Tickets from 50 EUR one way. Allow a full day. See Fira and Oia, or Fira plus one activity. An overnight stay is recommended if your schedule permits.
