Let's be realistic: Mykonos will never be cheap. You won't match the daily costs of Naxos or Paros. But you can have a genuinely good time here without spending 200+ EUR per day. The secret is knowing what's free, what's overpriced, and where the locals actually eat.

The island's best experiences cost nothing:

  • Walking through Mykonos Town (Chora) -- The maze of whitewashed lanes, the windmills, Paraportiani Church, the harbour, Petros the pelican. Free.
  • Sunset from the windmills or Little Venice -- One of the best sunsets in Greece. Free (unless you buy a cocktail).
  • Swimming at public beaches -- Every beach on Mykonos has a free section. Bring your own towel.
  • The walk to Armenistis Lighthouse -- 7 km from town, wild coastline, views of Tinos. Free.
  • Exploring Ano Mera village -- The inland village with the Tourliani monastery. Free.
  • The harbour and Old Port area -- Watch the fishing boats, browse the shops, find the pelicans.

Where to Save Money

Accommodation

Option Price Range Notes
Hostels / dorms 25-50 EUR per night Limited options but they exist
Budget hotels inland 60-100 EUR per night Away from the waterfront, significantly cheaper
Apartments with kitchen 70-120 EUR per night Cook your own meals, huge savings
Camping 20-35 EUR per night Mykonos Camping near Paradise Beach

Key strategy: Stay away from the waterfront. Hotels in Mykonos Town and directly on the beaches charge a massive premium for location. Properties 10-15 minutes' walk inland, or in areas like Ornos, Tourlos, or near the New Port, can be half the price.

Book early. Shoulder season (May-June, September-October) prices are 30-50% lower than July-August. The weather is still excellent.

Consider an apartment with a kitchen. Eating out three times a day at Mykonos restaurant prices will destroy any budget. A kitchen lets you make breakfast and lunch yourself.

Eating

Where What Cost
Gyro from a souvlaki shop Pita gyros, souvlaki 4-7 EUR
Bakery breakfast Tyropita (cheese pie), spanakopita, coffee 3-5 EUR
Supermarket lunch Bread, cheese, tomatoes, fruit 5-8 EUR
Village taverna (Ano Mera) Full meal with house wine 12-18 EUR per person
Waterfront restaurant (Chora) Main dish 18-35 EUR per person
Little Venice sunset cocktail One drink 12-18 EUR

The souvlaki shops in Mykonos Town are the single best budget hack. A pita gyros for 4-7 EUR is filling, delicious, and available until late. Look for the shops the locals queue at, not the ones with the nicest-looking menus.

Ano Mera has tavernas that serve full meals at prices significantly lower than Mykonos Town. If you're renting a car or scooter, eat there.

The supermarkets (there are several in Mykonos Town) sell bread, cheese, olives, tomatoes, and fruit. A picnic on a beach costs a fraction of a restaurant meal.

Skip the waterfront restaurants for daily meals. Save them for one special dinner.

Beaches

  • Don't rent sunbeds. Bring your own towel and sit on the free section of sand. Every beach has one.
  • Ornos, Platis Gialos, and Kalafatis have free sections with decent space.
  • Agios Sostis and Panormos are north coast beaches with no sunbed charges at all.
  • The water taxi from Platis Gialos costs 20 EUR for a day pass -- cheaper than taxis to individual beaches.

Transport

Option Cost
Bus (one way) 1.80-2 EUR
Bus from town to most beaches 1.80-2 EUR
Taxi from town to beach 10-20 EUR
ATV rental (per day) From 15-25 EUR
Car rental (per day) From 35-50 EUR
Water taxi day pass 20 EUR

The bus is your best friend. Mykonos's bus network covers most of the main beaches from Fabrika station. Rides cost under 2 EUR.

An ATV is good value if you're sharing. From 15-25 EUR per day, it lets you reach beaches and villages the bus doesn't serve well (Agios Sostis, Fokos, Armenistis Lighthouse).

A Budget Day on Mykonos

Here's what a full day costs if you're careful:

Item Cost
Bakery breakfast 4 EUR
Bus to beach 2 EUR
Beach (free section) 0 EUR
Supermarket picnic lunch 6 EUR
Bus back to town 2 EUR
Walk through Chora, windmills, sunset 0 EUR
Souvlaki dinner 5-7 EUR
One beer at a harbour bar 5 EUR
Total 24-26 EUR

That's an extreme budget day, but it proves the point: Mykonos has a free layer underneath the expensive one.

A more comfortable budget -- eating one taverna meal, having a coffee or two, maybe renting an ATV -- runs about 50-70 EUR per day excluding accommodation.

Budget Day Trips

Trip Cost
Delos day trip (ferry + entry) About 45 EUR
Tinos by ferry About 9-15 EUR return
Naxos by fast ferry About 30-40 EUR return
Walking tour of Chora (self-guided) Free
Armenistis Lighthouse (by ATV) ATV rental cost only

The ferry to Tinos is one of the best budget day trips in the Cyclades -- 20-30 minutes, under 10 EUR each way, and you get a completely different island for the day.

When to Go on a Budget

Late May and early June -- Flights and accommodation are 30-50% cheaper than peak season. Weather is warm, beaches are open, but the full-season crowds haven't arrived.

September -- Similar to June in terms of weather and value. Some places start winding down late in the month, but the first three weeks are excellent.

Avoid July-August if budget is a priority. Everything is at peak prices and fully booked.

What Should You Know?

  • Mykonos is expensive, but not uniformly expensive. The waterfront, the beach clubs, and the nightlife are where the money goes. The back streets, the village tavernas, and the free beaches are surprisingly affordable.
  • Water is expensive at beach bars. Buy bottles at the supermarket and bring them.
  • Don't fall for the sunbed pressure. You have every right to sit on the free section of any public beach. Nobody can make you rent a sunbed.
  • Cook breakfast and lunch, eat out for dinner. This single strategy saves 20-30 EUR per day.
  • The free things are the best things. The sunset, the walking, the swimming, the views -- Mykonos's greatest hits don't charge admission.

Mykonos on a budget: stay inland or in shoulder season, eat gyros and bakery food, use the bus (under 2 EUR), swim at free beach sections, and save restaurant meals for special occasions. A careful budget day costs 25-50 EUR plus accommodation. The best experiences on the island are free.
