If you have one day on Mykonos -- whether from a cruise ship, a ferry stopover, or a day trip from another island -- you can see the highlights: the windmills, Little Venice, Paraportiani Church, the maze of Chora, and one beach. Here's a realistic itinerary that covers the essentials without rushing.
In this guide
One day isn't enough for Mykonos. Let's acknowledge that upfront. You'll miss the Delos day trip, the north coast beaches, the sunset at the lighthouse, and the nightlife. But one day is enough for the things that make Mykonos famous -- the whitewashed town, the waterfront, and a swim in the Aegean. And if that's all you have, here's how to use it well.
The Itinerary

Morning: Mykonos Town (08:00-12:00)
08:00 -- Start at the Old Port / Harbour
Begin where the fishing boats are moored. The harbour is quiet in the early morning -- the cruise ship crowds haven't arrived and the light is soft and golden. Look for Petros's pelican successors wandering the waterfront.
08:30 -- Paraportiani Church
Walk from the harbour towards the Kastro neighbourhood to find Panagia Paraportiani -- a cluster of five white churches merged together over several centuries into a sculptural, organic form. One of the most photographed buildings in Greece. Best photographed in morning light.
09:00 -- Little Venice
Five minutes from Paraportiani. The waterfront district where 18th-century houses hang over the sea. In the morning, the bars and restaurants are closed and the area is peaceful -- a good time for photos without the sunset crowd. Have a coffee at one of the cafes if they're open.
09:30 -- The Windmills (Kato Mili)
Walk up the hill behind Little Venice to the row of six windmills. From here, you get a panoramic view: Little Venice below, the harbour to the north, and the Aegean stretching to the horizon. Free, always open.
10:00 -- Walk the lanes of Chora
Mykonos Town is a maze by design -- the narrow, winding lanes were built to confuse pirates. Getting lost is part of the experience. Spend an hour wandering the Matogianni area (the main shopping street) and the quieter back lanes of the Kastro neighbourhood. Every corner turns up a whitewashed wall, a blue door, or a bougainvillea-draped balcony.
11:00 -- Quick stop at the Archaeological Museum (optional)
If you're interested in history, the museum near the Old Port houses artefacts from Delos and Rineia. Entry is 1 EUR. Allow 30-45 minutes.
Midday: Beach (12:00-15:30)
12:00 -- Bus to Ornos or Platis Gialos
From Fabrika station, take the bus to one of the nearest organised beaches:
- Ornos (3 km, most frequent bus): Sheltered, family-friendly, shallow water, sunbeds and tavernas. The easiest beach day.
- Platis Gialos (5 km, every 30 min): Longer beach, water taxi connections, more facilities.
12:30 -- Swim and lunch
Grab a sunbed or lay your towel on the free section. Swim in the turquoise water. Have lunch at a beachfront taverna -- grilled fish, a Greek salad, and a cold beer.
Afternoon: Return and Sunset (15:30-19:00)
15:30 -- Bus back to town
Return to Mykonos Town with time to browse shops, buy souvenirs, or revisit spots from the morning.
16:30 -- Walk the waterfront
Stroll along the harbour, watch the boats, and find your spot for sunset.
17:30-18:30 -- Sunset at Little Venice or the Windmills
This is the signature Mykonos experience. The sun drops into the Aegean, the sky turns gold and pink, and the windmills are silhouetted against the light.
Choose your sunset spot:
- Little Venice -- Grab a table at a waterfront bar. Arrive 45-60 minutes before sunset in summer to secure a seat. A cocktail will cost 12-18 EUR but includes the best free show on the island.
- The Windmills -- Free, no purchase required, panoramic view. More crowded but no cost.
19:00 -- Dinner (if time allows)
If your schedule permits, eat at one of the harbour tavernas or in Little Venice. A souvlaki from a backstreet shop is a faster option (4-7 EUR).
Adjustments by Arrival Type

From a Cruise Ship
Cruise ships dock at the New Port (Tourlos), about 2 km from town. A shuttle or the Port Sea Bus connects to the Old Port. You typically have 6-8 hours. Follow the itinerary above but skip the museum and reduce beach time to ensure you're back at the port with time to spare.
From a Ferry (Day Trip)
You'll arrive at the New Port. Take the shuttle or walk to town (25 minutes). If you're on a day trip from Santorini, Paros, or Naxos, you'll have 5-7 hours depending on ferry schedules. Follow the itinerary and prioritise the town and windmills over the beach if time is tight.
Stopover Between Islands
If you're passing through on a Cyclades island-hopping trip with one night on Mykonos, you have more time. Use the morning for the town walk, the afternoon for a beach, and the evening for the sunset and dinner. The nightlife kicks off from 23:00 if you're staying late.
What to Skip on One Day

- Delos -- The archaeological island requires a half-day minimum. Not feasible on a one-day visit.
- The north coast -- Panormos, Agios Sostis, and the lighthouse are too far from town for a one-day schedule.
- The party beaches -- Paradise and Super Paradise are fun but consume time. If your priority is seeing Mykonos Town and swimming, Ornos or Platis Gialos are faster.
- A food tour or cooking class -- These take 3-4 hours and are better suited to a multi-day visit.
What Should You Know?
- Wear comfortable shoes. Mykonos Town is cobblestones and uneven lanes. Flip-flops for the beach, proper shoes for the town.
- The windmills and Little Venice are free. No tickets, no opening hours.
- The bus is the fastest way to the beach. 1.80 EUR, frequent service from Fabrika.
- Morning light is best for town photos. The lanes are empty, the light is soft, and you'll have the windmills to yourself.
- Sunset is the main event. If you have to choose between more beach time and catching the sunset, choose the sunset.
- Mykonos Town is intentionally maze-like. Don't fight it. Getting lost usually leads to something photogenic.
One day in Mykonos: morning walking tour (windmills, Little Venice, Paraportiani, the lanes), midday beach at Ornos or Platis Gialos, afternoon sunset at Little Venice or the windmills. Bus from Fabrika (1.80 EUR). Free highlights.
