A sunset cruise from Mykonos puts you on the Aegean as the sky turns gold behind the windmills and Little Venice. Most cruises run 2-3 hours, depart from the Old Port around 17:30, cost from around 38 EUR per person, and include at least one drink. It's the most photographed evening on the island, and the view from the water is better than the view from the land.
In this guide
Mykonos has no shortage of sunset spots -- Little Venice, the windmills, the hotel terraces -- but they all involve crowds, competition for seats, and a fixed vantage point. On a boat, you get the entire western horizon with the island's silhouette in the foreground, the light changing minute by minute, and nobody standing in front of you with an iPad.
The cruise industry in Mykonos is well-established and ranges from intimate romantic sailings to full-blown party boats with DJs and open bars. Picking the right type matters.
What Are the Options?

| Cruise Type | Duration | Price Range | Vibe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional boat sunset cruise | 2 hours | From ~38 EUR | Relaxed, one complimentary drink, small group |
| Standard catamaran sunset cruise | 3 hours | 50-80 EUR | Sailing, drinks, snacks, swim stop possible |
| Full catamaran day + sunset | 5 hours | 100-150+ EUR | Afternoon swimming, beach stops, dinner on board |
| Party cruise | 3 hours | 40-60 EUR | Music, dancing, drinks, younger crowd |
| Private yacht charter | 2-4 hours | 300-800+ EUR | Exclusive, customisable route, champagne |
Departure point: Most cruises leave from the Old Port of Mykonos Town. Some larger operators use the New Port (Tourlos), with complimentary hotel-to-port transfers included.
Departure time: Typically 17:30-18:00 in summer, adjusted seasonally so the cruise catches the sunset.
Return: Around 20:00-21:00, depending on duration.
What's Typically Included?

The basics (standard sunset cruise): - Boat transfer from and back to port - Professional crew and captain - 1 complimentary drink (wine, beer, or soft drink) - Safety equipment - Taxes and fuel
The better options add: - Snack platters (cheese, fruit, local appetisers) - Multiple drinks or an open bar - A swim/snorkelling stop at a sheltered bay - BBQ or light meal on board - Hotel pickup and drop-off
Check inclusions when booking. The cheapest cruises include one drink and nothing else. The mid-range ones include food and multiple drinks. The premium options are essentially floating dinners.
What Will You See?

From the Water
The cruise typically sails west from Mykonos Old Port, passing:
- Mykonos Town skyline -- The white cube buildings, blue doors, and church domes seen from the sea as a continuous line along the waterfront.
- Little Venice -- The colourful waterfront houses with balconies overhanging the water. From the boat, you see them from the angle they were designed to be seen from -- by approaching sailors.
- The Windmills -- The row of Kato Mili windmills on the hill above Little Venice. Iconic at any time; at sunset, silhouetted against the orange sky.
- The open Aegean -- As the boat heads into open water, the surrounding Cycladic islands appear on the horizon -- Tinos, Syros, Delos, and on clear days, more distant silhouettes.
The Sunset
The main event. The sun sets into the Aegean west of Mykonos, and from the water the light show plays out across the entire horizon. The sky goes from blue to gold to orange to pink, and the reflected light on the water and the island's white buildings creates colours that don't exist on land.
On a clear evening, the 15 minutes either side of the actual sunset are the most photogenic. After the sun disappears, the sky often puts on a second show with deep pinks and purples that can last another 20 minutes.
Which Type Should You Choose?
Romantic evening for couples: The standard catamaran or traditional boat cruise (2-3 hours, snacks and drinks, no party music). Small groups, quiet atmosphere, emphasis on the sunset itself.
Fun night out with friends: The party cruise. Music, dancing, drinks, younger crowd. The sunset is the backdrop rather than the main event.
Full experience: The 5-hour catamaran cruise that starts in the afternoon with swimming stops at south coast beaches and ends with sunset and dinner on board. More expensive but the best value per hour.
Money-no-object: Private yacht charter. Just you and your group, route and timing customised, champagne in hand.
How to Book
Book in advance through: - GetYourGuide and Viator -- Widest selection, user reviews, free cancellation on most options - Local operators (Aegean Ventures, Mykonos Cruises, etc.) -- Sometimes cheaper, direct booking - Your hotel concierge -- Can often book local operators and arrange transfers
Peak season (July-August): Book at least a few days ahead. The popular sunset cruises fill up.
Shoulder season (May-June, September-October): Usually available with less notice. Smaller groups, which often means a better experience.
What Should You Know Before Going?
- Bring a light jacket. It's warm at departure time but once the sun goes down and the boat is moving, it gets cool on the water. A thin layer makes the difference between comfortable and shivering.
- Arrive 15-20 minutes early. For boarding, safety briefing, and securing a good seat.
- Seasickness is possible on choppier days, especially when the Meltemi is blowing. If you're sensitive, take precautions. The calmer months (May-June) have flatter water.
- Wear shoes you don't mind getting wet. On smaller boats and catamarans, spray and splashing are part of the experience.
- Bring a waterproof phone case if you plan to take photos on the boat. Spray, wet hands, and bouncing boats are not kind to electronics.
- The cheapest option isn't always the best value. A 38 EUR cruise with one drink and no food may be less satisfying than a 70 EUR cruise with snacks, multiple drinks, and a swim stop. Check what's included.
- Wind cancellations happen. The Meltemi wind in July-August can cancel or modify cruises. Most operators offer free rescheduling or refunds.
- Don't eat a huge meal before boarding. Especially on smaller boats. A light snack is fine; a three-course dinner is not.
When Is the Best Time?
June and September -- Calm seas, warm evenings, beautiful light, and fewer boats on the water. The best combination.
July-August -- Warmest evenings but windiest conditions. The Meltemi can make for a bumpy ride and occasionally cancels sailings.
May and October -- Cooler evenings (bring that jacket) but gorgeous, soft light. Fewer crowds, often better prices.
Mykonos sunset cruises depart from the Old Port around 17:30. Standard cruise: 2-3 hours, from ~38 EUR. Book in advance during summer. Bring a light jacket for after sunset. The view of Little Venice and the windmills from the water is worth the ticket.
